Is Hollywood dead, dying,... or just plain lazy!?

Laziness. Just pure laziness. They tap all the good money makers for all the money they can get then churn out a bunch of sequels just to make sure the barrel's empty. But don't be so down on Hollywood about it. After all, we're the ones who still pony up the money to go and see the stinkers.
